But how can I be calm when there’s so much to worry about? Worrying about something can give it a chance to get bigger. It keeps it alive and keeps the habit of worry alive. Sometimes creating a drama keeps your ‘plight’ alive and critical, but it does not offer any relief to the situation.

Listen to a bird’s song until it moves away. Alternatively, sit and concentrate on how many different people’s voices you can hear, or how many bird noises are around you. If you’re feeling nervous or are waiting for something to begin, it can be very calming to close your eyes, take a few breaths and focus on the noises around you. How many different people’s voices can you hear? How many bird calls can you pick up? After a while, you should be comfortable relaxing to the sound of barking dogs!

Turn it around, squeeze it, catch it, feel the weight of it and its texture. Stay focused on the object for as long as you can. You can also consider the life of the object. How many hands has it been through? Who made it? What was their story? If you don’t have an object, think of one and stay with it for three to five minutes.
