It is well-known that the strength of F-P steels can be expressed by the expanded Hall-Petch equation [4], where the grain size effect and the precipitation hardening increment are dominant. An example is shown in Figure 2. Plain 18 carbon steels with polygonal ferrite-pearlite microstructures and with a ferrite grain size of approximately 6 microns, should have a YS of about 400 MPa and a UTS of approximately 500 MPa, while a microalloyed steel of similar grain size might have a YS higher by 100MPa.
