We can at least try to 36 THE LEARNER'S STRATEGIES AND THE TEACHER'S STRATEGIES discover the 'reality' of what is happening. Researchers have tried to do this by doing the following: 1. Learners have been asked, for example, in oral interviews, which strategies they use in general, or which strategies they use when attempting a particular task. 2. Learners have been asked, by using questionnaires, whether and to what extent they use particular strategies. 3. Learners have been observed while they work at their language learning tasks.
THE LEARNER'S STRATEGIES AND THE TEACHER'S STRATEGIES 31 Aptitude, learning styles and beliefs about language learning It is difficult to separate these three themes (see Ellis 1994: 541 for a concise discussion of this). If, as the literature suggests, aptitude and learning styles are 'fixed', then if we were to discover that effective strategy use was directly linked to either of these learner attributes, it would be fruitless to try to train students to use strategies. Fortunately, this does not seem to be the case.
