Detailed accounts of the US research are set out in Decker and Van Winkle (1996), Huff (1996) and Miller et al. (2001). Although research on youth gangs in Europe is not as prolific as that in the USA, there are a few important studies. In his highly respected ethnographic study of youth groups in Liverpool, for example, Parker (1974) illustrated the problems of applying the concepts of culture and subculture to the explanation of delinquency. Parker, who studied the groups concerned for three years, showed the detail and complexity of adolescent development in such circumstances.
The internationalisation of organised crime of this kind increased during the twentieth century in parallel with the globalisation of transport and communications. In recent years, however, the phenomenon has fostered criminal networks whose activities seem truly global. Are such organisations involved in what official sources and the media increasingly describe as ‘transnational’ organised crime? Mueller (1998) points to the fact that the term ‘transnational crime’ is over a quarter of a century old.
