Im Zusammenhang mit den Begriffen Subjekt und Ziel wurde gezeigt, dass die Menge der Eigenschaften, die für ein System angegeben wird, niemals vollständig sein kann – die Auswahl der jeweils als relevant erachteten Eigenschaften ist subjektiv und hängt von der jeweiligen Zielsetzung ab. Dieser Gedanke wird nun wieder aufgegriffen, wenn es um die “Aufgabe” als “Zielsetzung für ein zweckbezogenes Handeln” geht. Die Überlegungen lauten dabei wie folgt: Das Verhaltenspotential eines Systems ist die Menge der möglichen Zustandsfolgen dieses Systems.
Ein formales Modell ist ein formales System, dessen Semantik über das modellierte Original bestimmt ist. Die Semantik eines formalen Modells wird über eine Abbildung – die Interpretation – erklärt, die den Elementen des Modells Ausschnitte aus der Wirklichkeit1 zuordnet. Der Vorteil dieser Beschreibungsform besteht darin, dass logische Ableitungsregeln benutzt werden können und die Ableitungen verifizierbar sind. Die Schwierigkeit der Modellbildung bleibt aber erhalten: Sie liegt in der Erstellung des Modells selbst und vor allem in der Konstruktion einer exakten Interpretationsvorschrift.
Geschlossene Systeme – Offene Systeme Geschlossene Systeme besitzen keine Relation zu ihrer Umwelt; daher kommt es zu keinerlei Kontakt, sei es in Form von Informationen, Relationen oder Gütern, mit anderen außenstehenden Elementen oder Systemen. Ein Beispiel für ein geschlossenes System wäre das Staatensystem der Erde. In offenen Systemen findet hingegen ein Austausch von Informationen und Leistungen mit der Umwelt statt. Ein Unternehmen ist ein Beispiel für ein offenes System. Die Bestandteile des Unternehmens passen sich zwangsläufig den Umweltveränderungen an, was bedeutet, dass offene Systeme in der Regel dynamische Systeme sind.
