The concluding chapter 6 will address this task, but not much needs to be said about it at this point. In conceptual terms, I will propose to replace the strong concept of progress as an almost self-propelled force of history with a notion that focuses on agency, imagination and critique. In contextual terms, I will try to apply such a notion to the situation of our time. After first identifying different types of progress at stake today, I will propose that one key concern of our time should be political progress.
And over time the view of how specific progress could be achieved was also subject to change. This differentiated finding suggests that we need to take a second look at how freedom and reason were seen by the Enlightenment thinkers and their followers. This will be done in chapter 4 with a view to identifying the flaws, if any, in the articulation between freedom and reason that help us to understand why the concept of progress withered away. As a result of this work at differentiation, some features come to stand out that bring the dimensions of progress into relation with each other.
These questions refer to what can be called the basic problematics of human social life – the economic, the political and the epistemic problématique. Different societies have answered – and still answer – these questions in different ways. Different answers may have some degree of incommensurability between them. They cannot necessarily be compared in strictly performative terms. Nevertheless, one can pose the question whether some societies are more ‘successful’ (Hall and Lamont 2009) than others in answering them; or whether some answers – in general, or in given contexts – are better than others.
