It has been argued here that the metatheoretical study of sociology must begin by treating scientific theory for what it is in its most specific and empirical sense: discourse. Previous sociological metatheory has not done this, so to employ existing classifications would cripple the present project from the outset. On the other hand, it is not acceptable to invent a classificatory scheme that has nothing at all in common with what sociologists themselves recognize as a plausible account of what is going on in sociology.
This means that discourse is at least three things: 1) a social practice, 2) a material event, 3) a product resulting from social conditions. First, it is a social practice in that texts are not epiphanies of the transcendent mind of an author. Authors cannot write without language and language is a social convention (Saussure 1959, Culler 1975). Discourse is an effective use Page 10 of language only because it obeys the socially defined, normal rules for talking and writing. Discourse is, thus, a regulated social practice.
