Thomas and Robert E. Park: Chicago Noir A to a close, the city of Chicago seemed to consume masses of unskilled workers who poured into it from the adjacent farmlands and foreign countries. The concentration of people into inadequate housing exerted pressure on existing facilities and services. Between ¡880 and ¡890, the population of the city increased by over ¡00 percent, establishing Chicago as the second largest city in the United States. The city was environmentally unhealthy, unattractive, and a dangerous place in which to reside.
It was from these studies that his ethnographic approach was developed. He brought back with him a unique perspective on cities, one considerably less moralistic than any of his teachers. A brilliant student of Small, Thomas was asked to teach several courses 31 Sociology Noir and was eventually appointed to a full-time position in sociology in ¡895, becoming a full professor in ¡9¡0. It was Thomas who was greatly impressed by the work of a former city journalist, Robert E. Park. Park worked for nearly ten years as a police reporter in Chicago, St.

Park’s wife, Clara Cahill, was an intellectual, artist, writer, and feminist, and Thomas’s wife was in the forefront of the su›rage and peace movements.
