But, at its core, the project was a test for the macrosocial theory that Parsons and his collaborators had developed so rapidly in the course of the 1950s.

Because Parsons's thought continued to evolve as he wrote, however, the conceptualization is not consistent throughout. In editing the work for future publication, the present author has been introducing notes to explain the most important changes in the theory. But, even with annotation, the inconsistencies are likely to pose difficulties in understanding for many readers. In The American Societal Community, Parsons wrote a subtle combination of a theoretical study and a very personal book about American society.
