Like Du Bois, Miller attributed the gains made by blacks, indeed the very survival of blacks, to the enormous efforts of teachers, physicians, ministers, and writers; like Du Bois, Miller lauded these men and women for their past and current contributions to black life. And like Du Bois, there was never the slightest hint that the intellectuals would default on their obligations. What was necessary to both Du Bois and Miller in their interpretation of the intellectual role was the linking of this class’ mission to the needs of the general black population.
In our own society similar policies prevail: There are intellectuals of the left who are seldom critical of the national Democratic Party, its policies and platforms; likewise, there are intellectuals of the right who are seldom critical of the national Republican Party, its policies and programs. Perhaps Singer’s point has some relevancy here, for having found a home and a place, at least politically, some intellectuals may be reluctant to give up the comfort of having roots, even when they disagree with the basic assumptions and policies.
Cruse’s treatment of this marginal cultural and political class enables us to examine what would be the ambivalent role of blacks as intellectuals in predominately white political organizations, in this case, socialists and communists. Cruse presents a case of black intellectuals in white political organizations to illustrate his point that blacks will never be free to develop their cultural and political agenda within white organizations, or black organizations, especially those organizations whose strategies and programs elevate class analysis over racial and ethnic analysis, socialists and communists, or elevate racial and social integration policies over nationalist ones.
