This is an oversimplification of the concept of interval versus waiting time. 11a and b. Any elevator requires periodic servicing and replacement of wearing parts. During that time a person who depends on a single car is totally without service and must walk. Making repairs at night is extremely costly and not favored. A group of elevators minimizes this problem and permits periodic repairs without total passenger inconvenience. A well-designed elevator plant will always have excess capacity so that vital traffic is maintained even when one car is out of service.
For cars with in-car lanterns, T begins when the lantern is visible from the vicinity of hall call buttons and an audible signal is sounded. The minimum acceptable notification time shall be 5 seconds. Note that providing a landing lantern with advance signaling of a car’s arrival and subsequent direction allows a greatly reduced time to hold the car at that floor. This is an important consideration in calculating elevatoring requirements, as will be discussed in the next chapter. Experience has demonstrated the desirability of the elevator arrangements illustrated and discussed in the following pages.
With a single-car installation, a passenger who just misses an elevator must wait for that car to return, for a period based on the round-trip time. With two or more elevators in a group, the reduction in waiting time is proportional to a factor related to the average round-trip time of each elevator divided by the number of elevators in that group. As an example, if four elevators serving the same floors are together in a group and it takes, say, 120 sec for each elevator to make a trip, a person calling for service may wait between 0 and 30 sec (120 sec divided by 4).
