We may assume that A has linearly independent rows, and that A = [A1 A2] with Al nonsingular. 2a, (9) xo:= CAt 0 1b/ is a solution of Ax = b of size polynomially bounded by the sizes of A and b. 1b provides a good characterization. 2c. There is a good characterization for the problem: given a rational matrix A and a rational vector b, does Ax = b have a solution? Proof. 2b we can specify a solution of polynomial size. 1b this can be shown by specifying a vector y with yA = 0 and yb = 1. 2b, again such a vector y exists with size polynomially bounded by the sizes of A and b.
One of Lagrange's results [1775b] is det AZ = (det A)' for 3 x 3-matrices. The idea of solving linear equations by elimination of variables was a standard technique in each of the papers on determinants. Elimination also occurs in a manuscript of Lagrange [1778], where in Section 12 it is described how to find a nontrivial solution of a system of homogeneous linear equations. The name Gaussian elimination derives from some papers of Gauss where elimination is applied. Gauss studied linear equations in order to estimate the orbits of celestial bodies, whose positions have been observed subject to errors.
Proof. 2 and the fact that the entries in A-' are quotients of (sub)determinants of A (cf. (3)). 2b. If the system Ax = b of rational linear equations has a solution, it has one of size polynomially bounded by the sizes of A and b. Proof.
