Using quantitative fluorescent antibody methods, Su-Lin and Honigberg 12 examined five cloned strains of apparently differing pathogenicity (shown in this case by both the subcutaneous mouse assay13 and by the clinical symptoms of the women from whom they had been isolated), and determined the relative amounts of common antigen present in each by measuring the reduction in fluorescence (compared with unabsorbed homologous rabbit antiserum) when the staining serum was absorbed with homologous and heterologous antigen.

Sections through the peltar-axostylar complex, which consists of sheets of microtubules, are also shown (Fig. ge,g-j). The structure differentiating the genus Pentatrichomonas and the species P. hominis from other trichomonads is kinetosome I (Fig. ge,g-j) of the independent flagellum (IF) and this flagellum (Fig. 9h-j). The kinetosome is located slightly dorsal to (just behind) the area at which the sigmoid F2 lamellae, arising from kinetosome #2, spread on the dorsal surface of the peltar-axostylar complex (Fig.

8a,c) is applied to the spatulate capitulum of the axostyle (Fig. 8a-c). The anterior part of the capitulum connects to a crescent-shaped pelta that surrounds the area in which the flagella emerge from the cell (Fig. 8b,c). Posterior to the nucleus, the capitulum narrows progressively, giving rise to a slender axostylar trunk that projects from the posterior cell surface. The projecting segment narrows more or less gradually to a sharp point (Fig. 8a-c). In living organisms and in those stained with hematoxylin there are rows of dense granules (hydrogenosomes) along the costa (paracostal granules), but not along the axostyle (Fig.
