7% of junior classes taught Welsh. 9%. Breaking down this overall result into a county by county analysis, the pattern is uneven. Table 11 reveals that the national result hides differences between counties. In South and West Glamorgan the five year trend has been towards less junior classes teaching Welsh. A three year trend (1979/80 to 1982/83) provides the same pattern with a decrease of 6% in these two counties. In Mid Glamorgan, Clwyd and Powys there are more encouraging signs with an increase in junior classes teaching Welsh.
This means that wards where older Welsh speakers predominate tend to be wards of approximately 25% to 65% density of Welsh speakers. Wards with relatively low densities of Welsh speakers (under 25%) show little difference in the proportions of younger and older people speaking Welsh. In wards where there is a relatively high density of Welsh speaker (65%+), the tendency is for younger speakers to be present in slightly larger proportions than older people. In heartland areas, the language is being maintained with the young.
Figure 4 is a scatterplot of the two variables, the difference in Welsh oracy and literacy, and oracy. 0001) suggests that the greater density of Welsh speakers in a ward, the greater the oracy-literature difference in Welsh.
