Associated with industrialized modernity, colonialism ended politically with the success of liberation movements in Latin America, Africa and Asia in the post-Second World War period. Post-colonialism in turn ushered in new formations of political, cultural and economic power – most notably the rise of the US as a global superpower, and the rise of post-Fordist modes of economic production. Along with the untrammelled flow of financial capital across national boundaries (usually to the benefit of the speculators trading and gambling on exchange rates and commodity prices), one key characteristic of the globalized economy has been the outsourcing of production from the industrialized nations in the west to sites of cheap labour in the global south.

Although materially excluded, the consumer subaltern is exploited for labour, and symbolically included and therefore painfully aware of all the luxuries, pleasures and comforts that consumer society provides to some and denies to others. As will be clear from the discussion to this point, one of the socioeconomic legacies of colonialism was the exporting of the class striations to settings previously characterized by other forms of social hierarchy.
