They only exist as realised in their expressive medium.

We may hear the song or see the painting and interpret it as an example of someone condensing their experience into song form or pictorial representation and then relaying it to us. But the act of expressing whatever sadness or anger we may recognise and relate to is realised in the act of making the song and painting. It doesn’t exist in some pure or prior state which words, music or paint then approximate in some way or other. And while different media may impart certain features and characteristics to what is communicated, they do not in themselves account for the significance of what is communicated.

The sense that we are creators of our identities is manifest in the expressive form we give to them. Narrative is the way in which we make sense of memories and prognoses, chance and coincidence, limits and possibilities. In life we frequently occupy the position of a storyteller in the midst of the story we are living. Striving to bring together the teller, the telling and the told for ourselves and for others is then the problem of identity, articulating our experience of reality as both acting on us, and being acted on by us, in a reciprocal relation.
