Complete vitrification eliminates concern for the potentially damaging effects of intra- and extracellular crystallization. Vitrification, in fact, is the formation of a glass-like, noncrystalline solid at the freezing point of an aqueous solution. At sufficiently low temperatures, a highly concentrated cryoprotective solution becomes so viscous that it solidifies into a metastable glass. The goal is to achieve a sufficiently high concentration of solutes to prevent the solution from freezing into crystalline ice when cooled and to ensure its transition into the amorphous or glassy state.
