The Black community as a whole has a strong sense of social relationships and personal distinctiveness. They tend to respond to issues holistically and use internal cues to solve problems. With few employment skills and limited opportunities for conventional success, few gang members have any hope for the future. Not surprisingly, most are involved in violent behavior, drug abuse, and criminal action. Minorities tend to be overrepresented in gangs. As they lose their connections to traditional cultural ways and confront urban realities, for instance Native Americans, and particularly younger teens, are becoming increasingly involved in gang behavior Clarke (2002). Recent immigrant teens may also find themselves involved in gang-related behavior as a way to fend for themselves in an alien and sometimes hostile environment (Hernandez, 2002).
