This statistic suggests that improving primary education is a major priority and challenge in most Asian countries, particularly in view of the importance of basic education for social and economic development. Increased spending per pupil in primary education may, by raising the quality of schooling, make it more attractive and increase its holding power. However, the authors also stress that ''throwing more money" at primary schools is not the answeror not the whole answer.
