In this light it is difficult, for example, to make sense or assess the real importance of a philosophic text such as Ludwig Wittgenstein’s celebrated Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (1921), one of the most influential texts in twentieth-century philosophy, regarded as a masterpiece which revolutionized contemporary philosophical thought. The eighty-nine-page long Tractatus consists entirely of cryptic, sibylline, epigrammatic and elusive claims about the alleged nature of thought, language, and the world, expressed in boldly assertive and authoritative tone, but without a shred of proof or evidence that what the philosopher is saying is actually true.
