It was something incredibly small. It just wasn’t at the core of who God had called us to be. As I reflect, I’m not sure why we thought we needed money. We didn’t have any expenses. We didn’t even take an offering every week. Money originally wasn’t even on our radar. But other ministries raised money, so why not? That was the beginning of the blur. For the first time ever, we had some money to spend. Someone suggested we use it to take a few ­people on a leadership and planning retreat. We’d brainstorm.

Later they grow to love the status quo. Eventually, they’ll give their best to protect what is, never dreaming about what could or should be. They need a vision with definition. 42 What contributes to it? Here are some of the problems of the visionless ministry. When there is no vision: • Most ideas seem like good ideas. This leads to over­ programming and burnout. • There is nothing compelling to give toward. This leads to a consumer mindset instead of a contributing mindset. • Organizations become focused inward.

Illustrate the vision. Reward those who live the vision. Highlight the vision anywhere you see it. Once you’ve done all of the above, do it all again. Here are a few of the things we do to move the vision forward: • We produce simple vodcasts and email them to members and attenders to renew the vision of the church. 46 What contributes to it? • We share video testimonies with the church to celebrate how the vision is changing lives. • We preach two series a year that help renew the passion for the vision.
