I figured we'd talk it out tonight. It wouldn't be the first time, but we'd never been this far down and this behind before. We were approaching the point where we could never catch up, and fast. 2. Something Big Sitting around a little apartment-building laundry room in your underwear on a hot, muggy night at about three in the morning feeding quarters into a Korean War vintage washer and dryer and watching the moths dive-bomb the lone light bulb was not exactly the most romantic of situations, but it increased my already deep depression.

There's a heavy demand to meet. The dealings with the suppliers are strictly cash, now that even Switzerland and the Bahamas aren't totally safe anymore, and sometimes that amount is very large. Many big banks are involved, of course, but lately there's been a lot of heat on. A bunch of banks have been exposed, and it has been very costly. Lately we've gone to a system of small and intermediate suppliers, middlemen, between the big and small banks. This time it was my turn to help out with confusing the source and the destination, as it were.

She listened attentively, asking a few very good questions when she needed clarification, and seemed to get increasingly interested when I showed her the magazine and the pictures of the two kids before they were snatched. I liked the fact that the more we talked, the less money seemed important and the more her own anger grew. She was used to all the shit that went on around these neighborhoods, but this was particularly dirty, and the faces—and the contrast in the pictures—made it very real. The cops had been right; she was very good when working in her element, and turned up a number of solid leads within forty-eight hours.
