The question is: how did the initial processes of coming out affect people’s thoughts on having children or remaining childfree? The answers are complicated by the fact that “coming out” meant different things for different people, happened at different times in people’s lives, and was often described as an ongoing, interactional process. For those who entered adulthood in the mid- to late-1990s (and were in their 20s at the time of the interview), lesbian and gay parenthood seemed feasible. For those who reached adulthood in the mid-80s to early 1990s (and Chapter 2 28 were now in their 30s), the story was more mixed—some wanted to be parents and were hopeful that parenthood would be on their horizon, while others felt they could not become parents due to their sexual identity.
Everyone I knew who was openly gay or lesbian didn’t have any [kids]. So I didn’t have a model. You certainly didn’t see it on TV, it wasn’t talked about. This is like the late 80s, early 90s. And so the people I knew didn’t have kids, so there was no role models either in my personal life or in the media that suggested you could be gay and have kids.
