My approach is that the potentials of the resources of speech and of writing are distinct, at many levels and in many ways. Their difference as material stuff determines that that is so. At the same time, cultures do very different things with the materials on which they work. Writing cultures have shaped the resources of writing in many different ways, which means that we need to know the social meanings that inhere in the resource as we have it available to us now. Societies attribute different values to the resources of speech and of writing, and regulate the relation between them in different ways.

It is the work of filling the elements of writing with content. In fact the task resembles that of forming hypotheses about the ‘content’ of these elements, and it is the work of making sense of these elements in all the possible combinations which they can contract with each other in the text. These elements may be sentences (though they may also be units above the sentence, whether 38 LITERACY IN THE NEW MEDIA AGE several tightly or loosely connected sentences, or the unit of the paragraph), or clauses, or phrases, or words in phrases.

Something needs to be said about semiotics and semiosis. Clearly, the concept of mode is crucial in a multimodal theory of literacy, and so are associated concepts such as inherent and culturally made affordance, modal specialisation, functional load and materiality. In a semiotic theory the foundational concept is that of the sign; associated with that are concepts such as interest, analogy, and metaphor. In my conception of sign it is both motivated and conventional, which is certainly not the position taken in the mainstream of thinking.
