Sub-headlines or bullet points provide additional branches of the F: to conform with the F-pattern, such sub-headings tend to be shorter than the main headline at the top. Eventually, about halfway through the piece, the reader’s eye starts to make a beeline down the left margin of the page, following the vertical stem of the F and “fi nishing” the text without actually reading most of it. Pressed for time, the reader races downward, plummeting ever more quickly to the end of the article. David Risley, a “blog marketing strategist,” remarks on the ruling importance of the F-pattern: “most blog readers are riddled with ADD [attention deficit disorder] .
There is an important place for conversation about the books we read; but this conversation must be nurtured by a wish to engage responsibly with other readers, rather than scoring points with shoot-from-the-hip opinions, or simply patting the author on the back. The difference between a thoughtful comment and a blurted-out reaction is something to keep in mind not only when you talk to other readers, but to the authors of the books you read— since reading really is a conversation with an author.
