This book expands on the problem of tension between societal space and state control under responsive authoritarianism. Chinese media provide an excellent window into these dynamics because they serve a dual function: on the one hand, they are supposed to function as the party’s “eyes and ears” by communicating information (feedback) from the “masses” to the party; on the other hand, they serve as a mouthpiece of the party that disseminates information about the political goals and policies of the government and as a propaganda instrument aimed at changing people’s political beliefs.

17 To draw causal inferences on media selection and media effects, I rely on an experimental research design. To separate the effect of the style of reporting from the newspaper’s brandname (label) on the ability of newspapers to persuade readers, I conducted an experiment with ordinary citizens in Beijing relying on experimental vignettes. A vignette is a short story about a political event that differs only in terms of the treatment – in this case, the frame of a news article and a reference to a specific newspaper at the beginning of the text.

Weller (2008) and Reilly (2012) have described these dynamics as “responsive authoritarianism,” emphasizing that societal forces can be beneficial to authoritarian rule as long as the state is able to sustain the delicate balance between tolerance and control. In other words, state and societal forces can mutually reinforce rather than undermine each other.
