Furthermore, primary teaching courses are the principal teacher education courses available to school leavers through the higher education central applications system, apart from a small number of places available on second level specialist programmes for areas such as home economics, technology and physical education.

Boys were more likely than girls to perceive engineer, computer programmer, television producer and, to a lesser extent, secondary teacher in this light. A similar pattern was in evidence on second and third choices. Those who intended to put primary teaching as their first degree choice (almost 7 per cent of the respondents) were more likely than others to see primary teaching as giving most job satisfaction—51 per cent of this group, almost all girls.
