Als ich ihn so anschaute, kam ich mir ganz fürchterlich vor. Ich hatte ihn umgebracht. Ich hatte ihn nicht eingeladen. Er hätte sich besser um seine eigenen Angelegenheiten kümmern sollen. Und jetzt war er nicht nur tot, er hatte mich auch in eine äußerst prekäre Lage gebracht. Was sollte ich jetzt tun? Sie war weniger als zehn Autominuten von hier entfernt.
Im Geiste schwamm ich im herrlichen Wasser des Pools. Morgen, wenn das alles vorbei ist. Ich werde im Pool schwimmen, eisgekühlte Drinks schlürfen und lange Sonnenbäder nehmen. Ich hatte es schon von Anfang an gespürt, aber ich war viel zu erschöpft gewesen, um mich darum zu kümmern. Jetzt rollte ich mich auf den Bauch und faltete die Arme unter meinem Kopf. Allerdings waren sie ganz klebrig vom Blut und rochen unangenehm. Ich gab mein Kopfkissen auf, streckte die Arme weit aus und legte mein Gesicht direkt ins Gras.
Das kam daher, dass ich mich nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit hauptsächlich vor dem Fernseher aufhielt und danach nicht mehr ewig weit durch das leere Haus laufen wollte. Aber in dieser Nacht war das anders. Seit der Fremde sich an der Tür verewigt hatte, grauste mir vor ihr. Irgendwer muss die Schweinerei da wegwischen, dachte ich. Und ganz bestimmt nicht heute Nacht. Meine Schlüssel hatte ich in der Tasche, und weil ich am nächsten Vormittag schon wieder zurückkommen wollte, brauchte ich weder meine Badesachen noch mein Taschenbuch mitzunehmen.
