In 1980, the Aberdeen group and a collaboration between Electromusical Industries Ltd and Hammersmith Hospital separately optimized image contrast using water-relaxation differences. Important developments have been superconductors, which enable generation of very strong magnetic fields uniform over a volume encompassing the whole body, and faster computing resulting in almost instantaneous image visualization. In 1987 Charles Dumoulin developed magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), which imaged flowing blood without contrast agents [10].
Radio waves are electromagnetic: M0 begins precessing around the RF pulse’s magnetic component (B1) similar to the previous precession around B0 (Fig. 5b). However, because the RF pulse is brief, this precession soon terminates. The angle through which M0 ‘‘flips’’ is effectively proportional to the RF pulse’s duration and strength. If the flip angle y is 908, M0 ends up in the ‘‘xy’’ plane (perpendicular to B0; Fig. 5b) and now precesses only around B0 again effectively creating a magnetic field varying sinusoidally at the Larmor frequency.
Fig. 4. [31P] spectra of intact, excised, rat hind-leg muscle. The signals are assigned to the a-, b-, and g -phosphates of nucleotide triphosphate (NTP) (predominantly ATP), phosphocreatine (PCr), inorganic phosphate (Pi) and the phosphomonoesters (PME). [31P] MRS is a noninvasive probe of tissue energy metabolism: a gradual breakdown of high-energy phosphates and a fall in intracellular pH resulting from the accumulation of lactic acid is shown in this series of spectra. , 1974, Nature, 252: 285–7 [20]; reproduced with permission.
