Naturally, the extraordinary partiality is also a source of conflicts, over what should be marked in public space, where, by whom, and how.
Of course, real and imaginary places have long stood metonymically for grand ideas, satirical commentary, geopolitical histories, horrifying or scandalous events, idealized community, maligned political stances, and so forth. We obviously are thinking about more than physical places when we reference Palestine, the Watergate, Columbine, Disney World, the Mexican border, Jellystone Park, the Eiffel Tower, Ground Zero, San Francisco, Verdun, the Great Wall, Pearl Harbor, Yosemite, Hogwarts, the White House, home, or the Hague, but each of these marks a physical locale and/or a widely recognized imaginary one.
To a degree exceeding the products of many other memory techné, one’s experience of memory places may involve planning (where and when to go, making reservations), financial resources (plane fare, lodging, gas, admission fees), and time to travel (vacation or time off from work). The touristic context is rooted in a projected or desired departure from the ordinary, in a set of expectations that one will encounter rare or unique relics, learn about highly significant events or people, and/or be moved in particular ways by the experience of the place.
