Teachers’ daily work within the context of PDSs is deeply embedded in the types of capacity-building endeavors that strengthen practice by positively affecting both skill level and knowledge base. At the heart of successful PDSs is the commitment to a shared mission focused on improving teaching and learning across the preK–12/higher education spectrum. PDSs were initially conceptualized with the goal of promoting student learning (Teitel, 2003), with four overarching goals: preparing preservice teachers; supporting ongoing professional growth of experienced teachers; conducting educational research; and improving student learning to guide partnership efforts (Hammerness & Darling-Hammond, 2005; Holmes Group, 1990; Teitel, 2003).
To my PDS colleagues at the Thomas A. Edison Elementary School for opening their hearts and classrooms more than a decade ago to a vision for school–university partnerships and for conceiving those PDS initiatives that are replicated throughout our PDS network. A special thanks to Ann Spindel for her boundless energy, attention to detail, and agreeing to take one last look at the manuscript before it went to print. To my colleagues Drs. Marie Amoruso, Joyce French, and Monique Reilly for their feedback and insights.
The groundbreaking first step taken by the University of South Carolina was the impetus for the creation of a professional network. The network focused solely on issues related to PDSs, which later evolved into the professional association now called the National Association for Professional Development Schools (NAPDS). org). NAPDS is the premier professional organization for all things PDS. Its website, newsletter, peer-reviewed journal, and an annual national conference are the lifeline for PDS educators.
