Is the ultrafundamentalist controversy over the role of public education simply part of a larger battle over the definition and meaning of American society? While the efforts of these groups have diminished in recent years, pressure has increased from ultrafundamentalist organizations such as the Moral Majority, Phyllis Schafly's Eagle Forum and others who are concerned with the value and belief systems that are emphasized in the textbooks widely used in the public schools of the United States.
You have a great amount of violence and abuse and drug problems and so forth, and something has caused that change, and we feel Page 37 24 its because the textbooks have totally abandoned, or almost totally abandoned, the basic traditional American values on which our nation was founded. g. role playing, diaries, death education exercises, questionnaires and values clarification games26 According to the Gablers, the inclusion of the above values is often Page 38 accompanied by the exclusion of countervailing values such as: — loyalty, faith, sacrifice and unselfishness — selfreliance and pride of accomplishments — freedom and liberty — attachments to home and country — limited powers of government — religious and cultural traditions — individual responsibility — scientific evidence for creation 27 In summary, the Gablers attack on the content of textbooks is ultimately rooted in their acceptance of an authoritarian approach to knowledge based on tradition and Scripture, a rejection of critical inquiry, scientific methods and relativistic models of knowledge.
