I shall argue, however, that both these sets of explanations are simplistic and ambiguous, that they tend to treat caste in politics abstractly rather than to examine the actual involvement of specific castes in their day-to-day politics in empirically testable situations over an extended period of time. The bulk of castes in India do not have caste associations: what they have instead are caste councils (caste panchayats) which merely address themselves to the primary social concerns of the caste - namely, endogamy, ritual and pollution.
