From the times we spoke on the phone before the interview, I realized that I was in for a treat. Larry J. is a business professional and has a very successful career.

While their sexual identity is the overarching topic, it does not exist in a social or cultural vacuum. Indeed, these men’s sexuality is but one identity around which many others may pivot and does not solely account for how race, class, gender, and region intersect in their lives. I have included stories from most, but not all, of the narrators who talked to me. In any given chapter, the choice of which stories to include was based on which seemed to speak best to the topic being covered. When appropriate, I have sometimes included more than one excerpt from a narrator’s story in a chapter.
