Using Encyclopedias for Background Information The encyclopedia’s main use is to provide an overview of a subject or topic. In addition, encyclopedias can introduce language specific to the research subject area.
In this way, new researchers could show others that they had read all or part of what was already in writing about a particular topic while introducing new material of their own.
