Merediz and Gervassi-Navarro’s description of the Atlantic as imperial reflects the impact postcolonial studies has had on Hispanic studies over the last few decades. Indeed, their defi nition of the fi eld comes in a volume dedicated specifically to a Latin Americanist perspective on the advent of transatlantic studies. As Merediz later writes in her own article in the volume, the recognition of the Atlantic as imperialized is meant to highlight what she sees as the new field’s potential for relegating Latin America once again to a secondary position within Hispanic studies.
