During the 1970s, the number of institutions receiving at least one patent grew slowly, but during the 1980s, the number more than doubled, from 80 in 1980 to 165 in 1994. This development affected both public and private institutions: The number of public universities and colleges receiving patents rose from 51 to 97; private institutions increased from 29 to 58. Patenting by the research universities grew more rapidly than by other institutions. During the 1980s, just as a growing number of academic institutions were receiving patents, the share of the 100 largest research universities (by volume of total research funds) increased from 75 to about 85 percent (where it has leveled off) of all newly issued academic patents.

While many elements are held in common, how they combine and where they lead varies widely. Surely students, faculty, staff, and administrators run across all institutions of higher learning as instruction is provided, credit is given, and degrees conferred. Research universities are conventionally taken as the model for the whole sector, and yet only about one in fifty institutions of higher education carries this designation. Whereas research now designates all manner of things, other than teaching, as a revenue stream, the influence of the �knowledge-making university model extends beyond its actual numbers.

Nor do the students come alone. Years of homework, test preparation, and applications to middle schools and high schools have coalesced entire households around demands for what college can and should be. For students, and for the institution itself, higher education today does not create its own origins but arrives in the middle of something it did not itself initiate, however much it is complicit or in cahoots with its own prehistory. “College-bound” refers as much to a disciplining of primary grades that binds kids to a future as it does to an outcome for a certain demographic of those 28 • Ch a p t er 2 who can afford to excel.
