The chapter comprising part 3 concludes with a consideration of how local and national politics may hinder or enable organizational visions of charity. Loaves & Fishes suffered a fall from grace in the local media after fieldwork for this study concluded, while the 1996 Welfare Reform Act encouraged faith-based participation in the work of the welfare state. The epilogue revisits a few Loaves & Fishes routine volunteers several years after fieldwork concluded. We find them still committed to doing the work of feeding the urban poor.
At times we seems so overwhelmed with the human suffering of so many hungry and homeless folks—people who are literally at their wits ends—that we lose touch with our time cycles. But the reality of Spring and new growth will not be denied.
