I wrote letters to people, telling them about what had happened or replying to their letters. And I wrote down an account of everything that happened in James’s short life. I wanted to do that straight away so I would never forget and he would never be forgotten. ’ But for some parents it is very difficult to begin to grieve. Many, often encouraged by family, friends and others, do their best to ‘put their experience behind them’, to forget and get on with life. Jan, for example, was desolate after her son’s death, but she had no chance to express how she felt.
My friends didn’t want to talk about it: they found it too difficult. Robin and I talked with each other, but not to anybody else. ‘I was determined to get pregnant again. When my daughter was born a year later, I felt as though I had come back to life. I was fine. A year after that, I became terribly ill. They could find nothing wrong with me, but I was sick every day, I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t even sit up – I had to lie down most of the time. I thought that I was dying. ’ Grieving is the way we express feelings of loss.
We were allowed to stay in the delivery room for as long as we wanted, and it was up to us when we wanted to say “goodbye” to Naomi and hand her over to the staff. Peter, Naomi and I were left on our own for at least an hour and the staff just popped their head round the door occasionally to see if we needed anything. They really got the balance between helpfulness and privacy exactly right. During that time we were offered the use of the hospital phone to call our family. ‘We were told the rest of the staff on duty wanted to see Naomi, and this added to our feeling that she was important and not a failure because she’d not survived.
