3. Lack of instructors. Another reason that writing is not taught in medical school is a lack of qualified instructors. Although Page 5 this is beginning to change, teachers of medical writing are not easy to find. Most physicians who are writing and editing medical articles and chapters learned to write and edit the hard wayby trial and error. 4. Composition under pressure and negligence. Competition to get published is often intense. Nowhere are deadlines more important than in medical publishing.

I was confused. So to make a point, I asked each resident to write on a piece of paper the percentage that "not infrequent" represents. They wrote 55%, 60%, 68%, and 75%. Quite a discrepancy, and not particularly scientific. Page 26 I suspect there are several reasons that we see so many double negatives in medical writing. One reason is we often don't have the exact number, so we are purposely vague. Another is that it is so common we have come to think it has meaning. Keep in mind, however, that double negatives are not reader-friendly, especially in scientific writing.

Writing is a skill necessary for physicians to do their jobs. In fact, many times the only thing a person knows about you is what you put on paper. Myth:"I don't have any talent for writing.
