Everyone was so afraid of computers at that time—this was 16 years ago—that I always gave them a little inspirational session before I started the software training. No one ever wanted the motivational part of the training to end—including me. In 1981, I hadn’t had much practice at standing up to people— especially if they were angry. My marriage had recently disintegrated because every time my husband got angry, I got quiet. But my retreat into silence only made him yell louder. Finally, I could cope with his rages no longer and I left. Now, here I was with a rageaholic boss, having jumped out of the proverbial frying pan only to find myself plunged right into the fire.
