23 Without a solid scientific training, it would be hard to dispute their assertions. But the question of what consequences a thinker’s scientific incompetence may have for the rest of his or her work remains open. Sokal and Bricmont repeatedly insist that they are not competent to judge, or even to understand, the works of the authors they discuss. However, on numerous occasions they insinuate much more general conclusions about the texts which they are scrutinizing. In the passage already quoted earlier in this chapter, they claim that ‘In many cases we shall demonstrate [démontrer] that if the texts seem incomprehensible, it 26 Impostures of French theory is for the excellent reason that they mean precisely nothing’ (39).
Moreover, Habermas uses this narrative paradigm more than once.
