The screes are best observed across the lake, from its southwestern edge. For those interested in' a closer inspection, there is a footpath along the base of the scree slope. The lake itself may be approached easily from the west, but by far the most scenic route is from Ambleside across the Wrynose and Hard Knott passes. However, this road is single track in many places (with passing points), and there are gradients of 1 in 3 and 1 in 4 near the passes. In the 1820s the route was thought to be so precarious that the traveller, Edward Baines, explained why he and a companion left their ladies behind: 'This step may appear so outrageously ungallant as to require explanation.
5 square kilometres, and there are other pavements nearby at Newbiggin Crags (SD 545795). The agile and energetic can scramble easily over the smoothed rock surfaces. For others there is a small grassy pathway: after coming out from the woodland, turn left down the hillside and walk around the end of the exposed rocks. Continue along the base of the rocks for a short distance (50 m or so) until you reach a large boulder (an 'erratic') perched on top of the rock pavement, and then turn right and walk up the hillside, through the spectacular limestone layers.
Rising up above the heartland of industrial England it provides both solitude and recreation. At its centre is a limestone plateau - the White Peak seldom below 300 m and often rising to above 450 m. One of the most beautiful parts of this unspoiled area is Dovedale, notable for its rock spires and natural arches and for the excellence of its trout. Isaak Walton, his disciple Cotton, and Sir Humphrey Davy, have all celebrated it, not only for the sport it afforded them, but for its natural charms.
