To address the former, multiple routes for entry to tertiary institutes are in place – for example, a student who has been in EM 3 stream in primary school and normal technical stream in secondary school can enter university after a stint in a technical institute and then at a polytechnic, provided that admission criteria to the university are met. To help meet the aspirations of the latter group of students, a School of the Arts as well as the Singapore Sports School has been established. In fact, the arts and sports scene in Singapore has undergone a renaissance in recent times, and job opportunities abound.
A similar evaluation system holds at the pre-university level. For institutional evaluation, data on leaving level examinations are available with the Ministry of Education. Data on other aspects are obtained from schools via various means: for example, self-reporting by schools, interviews and external evaluation by teams from the Ministry of Education. Data on rankings (or banding) of schools provide the necessary information for schools to know where they stand with respect to others nationally and also provides the momentum for Educational Evaluation in Singapore 29 them to improve their standings.
