Children's rights and protests provide the main interest in these books, and the readership is carefully circumscribed by the content, tone and style. In Paula Danziger's Can You Sue Your Parents for Malpractice? (1979) Lauren, the teenage protagonist, takes an elective class in Law for Children and Young People.
Children can feel equally lost in their parental homes, a theme explored in many stories by American writer Betsy Byars (b. 1928). Byars has written over fifty books for young people and her repertoire includes both light humorous fiction and more serious books. Her style is economical and she tackles complex issues in ways that are accessible to young readers. In her family fictions Byars explores a range of parent-child relationships, sometimes arousing sympathy for parents trying to cope in adverse circumstances, but she often takes a critical stance in her depiction of parents, describing family situations in which parents and children fail to engage at the emotional level.
