33 In my experience, I have found Becher and Trowler to be right in this respect; mainstream economists do not generally communicate with people who hold radically different views, even within economics. Most mainstream economists know little if anything about less widely accepted economic theories or their empirical findings. When asked their opinion of a particular heterodox work, they generally respond by saying that they don’t know anything 40 Looking into the Fishbowls about it, that the work is faddish, that fads come and go in economics, and that they can’t really spend the time to delve into ephemeral trends which will inevitably die in the marketplace of ideas.
In a sample of almost two thousand institutions of higher education, Steven Brint and his associates found that the number of such programs grew almost 250 percent during the period from 1975 to 2000, from 674 to 1,633. 56 What is new in the current scene is the intensity of the call for interdisciplinarity and the increased funding available for it. 57 These efforts have come from major research universities as well as from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the National Academy of Sciences, the MacArthur Foundation, the Andrew W.
Of these, four were administrators or former administrators and one was the seminar leader. Half of the seminar faculty were women (see Appendix Table A-1). The seminar also had nine postdoctoral fellows, more than any other seminar. Three were in the sciences (chemistry, computer science, and mathematics), two in the social sciences (sociology/anthropology and history), two in the humanities (English and American studies), and two in the arts (one in theater and one in fine arts). Key Players I interviewed eight members of the representation seminar (see Appendix Table A-2).
