It was precisely this failure to distinguish between physical and social reality which created such confusion for the administrators of the policy of apartheid in South Africa, so pointedly satirized by Tom Sharpe (1973). Observations from Central and South America and India confirm the basic point that people with the same 'objective' degree of skin colour can be categorized socially in different ways.

This section attempts to bridge that gap by examining specific and problematic aspects of identity, including anomie, recognition and pragmatic failure. Fundamental to the argument is a view of language variation and communicative practices as providing the resources and the coordinates for the construction of identities and self-expression.
