By contrast, DNA and protein formation must be described by making quite literal use of the linguistic terms code, transcribe, and translate. We speak of a genetic code, of DNA being transcribed into RNA, and RNA being translated into protein. The genetic code is composed of letters (nucleotides), words (codons or triplets), sentences (genes), paragraphs (operons), chapters (chromosomes), and books (living organisms).
Socrates is white. Sentence 1 expresses an "is" of identity. Socrates is identical to the teacher of Plato. Identity is a relation which is reflexive (A is identical to itself), symmetrical (if A is identical to B, then B is identical to A), and tran sitive (if A is identical to B, and B is identical to C, then A is identical to Q. If letters are scribbled in the sand one can use either explanation to account for this fact. But scientific explanation merely replaces one regularity with another one, so in the end one is left with broad scientific laws which govern temporal successions. Why should we accept these broad regularities as evidence for a rational agent instead of treating them as brute givens without an explanation? Swinburne answers that we can explain some temporal regularities by appealing to rational agency and that the other regularities cannot be explained except in this way.
