I’m not him. ” I don’t want to exaggerate the transference dynamic. It doesn’t usually dictate the relationship between leader and staff. Many leaders enjoy strong, positive connections with their people, connections that are both professional and personal, congenial and collegial, and that foster rational discussion and decision making. But at some level for everyone, and particularly for some people, parental transference can be an important influence. When an aspect—even a small one—of an issue or a decision touches something meaningful to us, transference can loom large.

Your children are yours, but you must let them go; you love them but you could kill them; they make you feel proud and fulfilled but terrified and furious; it’s wonderful being with them but fabulous to get away from them. There is no cure for any of this. No book or expert can fix it. You’re not helpless; you respond, you manage, you make progress, you cope. But you don’t just resolve a dilemma once and for all. It recurs periodically in different forms and must be addressed each time, often in different ways.

But the higher a person rises, the less direct contact she has with the organization’s staff and clients, the more attenuated and filtered her personal influence becomes—and the more subject to misinterpretation are her actions. Of course, in any direct encounter a superior is more powerful than a subordinate, but the experience of leading, especially when it comes to getting large numbers of people to change, often leaves leaders far more aware of their vulnerability than of their power.
