In the 1990s, the level of antenatal care rose by 4% to a currently estimated 70% of women in subSaharan Africa receiving at least one antenatal consultation. Millions more lives could be saved if health systems were developed to ensure that services are of high quality and extended to everyone who needs them. This means providing every woman with skilled care during childbirth and emergency obstetric and neonatal care if complications arise. It also means ensuring children’s access to quality services for prevention and treatment of childhhood illnesses.
